PLAYER SAFETY
Player Safety Guidelines for Digital Media
These rules aim to protect players from misuse of photos and videos, not to stop legitimate recording for performance improvement or achievements. The goal is to shield players from harm or risk through improper use of film and video.
For sports in public areas where organizers have limited control, like open rivers, they should take all reasonable steps to promote safe photo and video use and address any concerns raised.
Photos and Videos
YFLHK will work to ensure safe photo and video use at all its events. YFLHK can ban photography, filming, or video at any of its events. Refusal to stop may lead to match cancellation and reporting to authorities.
No photography is allowed in changing rooms or related areas.
Online Consent
-
Get written consent from player/parent before sharing player info online. If content changes, inform parents and get new consent.
-
Take extra care with vulnerable children, like those fleeing violence or with disabilities. Consider if posting could put them at risk.
-
Famous players deserve the same protection as others. Use common sense and prioritize the player's best interests.
Using Images and Info
-
Never post personal details that could identify a player (address, email, phone). Direct all contact through the player's club. Use only first names for achievements.
-
Never show players in demeaning, tasteless, or provocative ways.
-
Only share event details (like coaching sessions) with those directly involved.
Concerns
Report any concerns about online posts to the YFLHK contact@yfl-hk.com.
Mobile Phones
Text messaging is a quick way to reach players but can be misused for bullying or abuse. Even well-meant messages can be misunderstood.
Texting Guidelines
Officials should carefully consider if they need players' phone numbers. Generally, all player contact should be open and appropriate. First, contact the parent-provided number. Agree with players and parents on what info to text directly to players - only essential updates like last-minute training cancellations. When possible, create team social "groups" with at least 2 adults - ideally the coach and another club member or player's parent.
Good practices include:
-
Securely store player phone numbers, limiting access to those who need it
-
Never send personal or sensitive texts to players
-
Report all concerns about improper texting to the YFLHK contact@yfl-hk.com.
Cameras and Videos
Mobile phones can secretly record and share images, putting children at risk. This is hard to monitor, especially in private areas like changing rooms, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. Never allow photos or videos in these private spaces.
